About the Orchestra
The West Island Youth Symphony Orchestra (WIYSO), as its names
indicates, is an orchestra for youth operating in the West Island
area of Montreal, Quebec. It consists of two sections, led by experienced
professional musicians: the Senior Orchestra, conducted by Stewart
Grant, is for youth
aged 12-25 years. The Junior Strings Orchestra, conducted by Jean-Ai
Patrascu, is for youth aged 8-15.
The Orchestra plays about 10 concerts each year, including several
in support of local charities. In addition, chamber music ensembles
formed from the members of the Orchestra play at various events
around the West Island.
Entry to the Orchestra is by audition. Rehearsals take place on
Sundays from September to May, and activities, including an annual
weekend music camp and exchanges with other youth orchestras, are
an important feature. The Senior Orchestra traveled to Western Canada in 2003, toured Europe in 2008, and is planning another international tour to mark its 25th Anniversary in 2011.
We are fully bilingual.
The Orchestra is administered by a strong team of dedicated volunteer
parents and other community members. Funding comes from annual membership
fees, grants from local and provincial governments, business partners,
sales of concert tickets and community fundraising.
WIYSO is a member of the Association des orchestres de jeunes du Québec (AOJQ). The AOJQ was formed to establish links between youth orchestras in Quebec and to promote the musical
education of youths and the development of new youth orchestras. The AOJQ organizes a music festival on alternate years.
