How can I join the orchestra?

If you're a youth musician . . .

Entry to the Orchestra is by audition. These normally take place in May and June, but can be arranged at other times of the year if there are openings for particular instruments. All members of the Orchestra take part in the audition process every year.

If you are interested in taking an audition please call 514 428-9643 or email info@osjwi.qc.ca.

However, the Orchestra requires more than just musical ability. A commitment to participate fully in all rehearsals, concerts, camps and other activities and to follow the Orchestra's dress and behaviour codes is required of all members. In addition, all Orchestra members must take ongoing private lessons on their instrument. Please see the Musician's Guide  for more information about the policies and rules of the orchestra.

Above all, you must enjoy classical music and have a desire to excel while having fun with the best group of young musicians anywhere!

If you're a parent . . .

Apart from the salaried positions of Artistic Director, Junior Orchestra Conductor and Administrative Assistant, the Orchestra is a volunteer-run, non-profit organization. We expect parents to help out with organization, fundraising, monitoring during rehearsals etc. The Orchestra is administered by a Board of Directors, positions on which are open to adult members of the musician's family. Elections to the Board take place at the Annual General Meeting, held every fall.

Parents are also expected to support and encourage their sons and daughters, getting them to rehearsals and concerts, attending the concerts and promoting the Orchestra among their friends, colleagues and family members.

How much does it cost?

Auditions carry a non-refundable fee of $20 for the Senior Orchestra or $15 for the Junior Orchestra.

If you are selected to join the Orchestra there is an annual fee of $300 for the Senior Orchestra or $200 for the Junior Orchestra. This fee covers all the rehearsals, the weekend music camp, local exchanges and other activities.

Trips and festivals, which are optional, carry additional expenses. Where possible the Orchestra covers a portion of these from its own funds. For major expenses like trips to Europe, we allow plenty of time for fundraising.

The fees charged to the musicians represent only a small part of the cost of running the Orchestra. We receive funding from government and non-profit organizations and local businesses, and from the sale of concert tickets, CDs etc. We also hold regular fundraising activities.

Limited funds are available to help in cases of hardship.

Community Involvement

Many members of the West Island community love music, but do not have musicians in the orchestra. You too can help support us!

Most of all, please come to our concerts, and tell your friends. Our musicians play very good music and it makes a big difference to them if they know there is a good audience to appreciate it.

If you have connections in business please consider helping us get financial support through our Partnership Program. Click here for more details.

There are many other ways in which you can help. If you feel you can contribute we'd love to hear from you. Please see our contact information.
